PHOEBE
LEMON
My passion is creating art that reflects my experience as a Chinese adoptee, exploring themes of love, family, identity, and sexuality.
I am a new media artist, programmer, researcher, writer, and international student basd in Shanghai. Born in China and raised in the United States, I currently study at New York University Shanghai, where I am pursuing a major in Interactive Media Arts and minors in Computer Science, Social Science, and Chinese Language.
I have worked on numerous projects in diverse realms, such as programming, web design, machine learning, animation, game design, print media, and 3D modeling. My artistry is defined by an anchoring in anthropology, research, and fieldwork. I am interested in digital storytelling, expanding on my cultural learnings in China and the U.S. Much of my research lies in exploring the implications of identity, race, and digital media in contemporary China.
Above anything, it is important that my work is gives voice to underresearched topics, and that my creative process takes place through a cultural, global lens.
Outside my academics, I have worked professionally as a writer and researcher, maintain involvment in my city’s adoptee community, and keep my life full of music as a cellist of 15 years.
